New College uniform

Tags: Uniform

Following a lengthy consultation process, we have decided to change the College uniform from September 2009. The new uniform will consist of:

New College uniform
Click for larger version

* A white polo shirt with the College logo in red.
* A black sweatshirt with the College logo in red and white, and the student’s House name in the House colour underneath.
* Blazers will not be compulsory and may be worn as an optional extra, but not as an alternative to the sweatshirt, which will be part of the compulsory uniform.
* Black trousers or skirt.  Black jeans are not part of our uniform.

The rest of the College uniform, and the PE uniform, will remain the same. The new uniform may be purchased from Dobsons in March from July 2009.

The new uniform will be compulsory for all new students joining the College from September 2009, but please be assured that your children may continue to wear their existing uniform until such time in the future that they need to have it replaced.

i think this is a very good idea as the children wearing blazers and ties almost always look scruffy as they wear their ties at different lengths and sizes.
Also blazers that dont fit properly always look scruffy.
well done neale wade, good move i say

personally i hate the new uniform, it makes us look like primary school children. the blazer and tie makes us look a bit more like adults.

I am not looking forward to the new school unform there is no where to put pens pencils etc. Many other people i have talked to also didnt like it and said they liked the original uniform because there is plenty of space to put every thing

As a parent I feel this is a lowering of standards for students. What job is there that allows people to wear polo shirts and sweat shirts? I thought the idea of uniform was to prepare students for work not for a kick about in the park.

I feel a uniform encourages personal disipline.

I have another son starting at Neale Wade in September and one of my reasons for applying for Neale Wade was because you had a uniform that was a shirt, tie and blazer and the pupils look reasonable smart when wearing this. However this will not be the case with a polo shirt and sweat shirt.
I am very upset that the school feels this is a good move.

I think the new uniform looks ok… it follows the current trend with school uniforms and I know it has been discussed alot with students. However I do agree that it doesn’t look so smart.

I would never have survived without a blazer! The pockets were too important. I know you can have one over your jumper but that won’t go well in the summer. Then again, aren’t bags allowed in lessons now? If bags are allowed I suppose there’s not really a need for blazer pockets any more.

Also I miss the ties… they’re what show us as Neale-Wade students! Although I agree that they aren’t usually worn well anyway, so they don’t look that smart.

I wonder though, what will student leaders wear to show their difference from other students? Or student service?

Overall though, I think it looks quite nice and comfy, and definitly a lot cheaper considering the prices parents have to pay for uniform in the current economy! That’s a big plus.

I like the new uniform as it looks quite smart and it’s pretty easy plus we can’t ever really look that scruffy as we do with ties, blazer etc. And it’s quicker to get ready in the morning. Never thought i’d say this to my school but – Good One. :)

Mar 31, 2009 16:42

As a parent i feel it makes the pupils look like primary school children.
It may look smarter than the present uniform, but if enough disiplin had been given
to the students from scratch on how to wear their uniforms correctly from the beginning and
adhered to at all times there would be no reason to change the uniform and the students would
of looked smart and professional at all times…….so if the students want to act like kids in the way they dress you may as well let let dress like primary school children.

i really do not like the new uniform because it will make us look like primary school kids. i think we should have a polo shirt and a black hoodie with the neale – wade symbol and your house name in the colour of your house.

personally, i dont mind the new uniform, its ok. it will make us look better as the blazers looked weird on the girls. soo its not that bad guyss.

Mar 31, 2009 17:55

Seriously, why change the uniform anyway? It makes us look incapable for being adults, do you want us to be treated like 5 year olds? We look better in what we are wearing today, a black hoodie would be fine, with our house name in the house colour, but if it’s to hot, like summer i don’t recomend it. I don’t see why you need to get rid of the ties, i personally really like the ties, maybe to go with a polo shirt or something, i strongly suggest keeping the ties, they make us look like you don’t treat us like we aren’t capable of being an adult, we are the next generation for goodness sake! Treat us how you would like us to treat you. The Way you are now going to make us dress, will make us act like how you make us.

Ask yourself if it will be better for us and how we look than just thinking about it yourselves.

i dont like the uniform, i like our currant uniform because i like the tie and the blazer is very handy to put my pens, pencils, logbook ect . . . in where as the new uniform will have no pockets and we will have 2 carry everything around with us and it will be very annoying, i also dont like the look of the new uniform and i prefer the currant one. also none of my friends like it but we all like the currant one. i think we should keep the old one because everyone likes it where as no one likes the new one.

And also what if people don’t carry around bags, they use their blazer to carry there stuff it, it’s just going to be worse.

Mar 31, 2009 18:10

where can you put all your things for school? you will have to keep it in your bag all the time, but that means you need to take it everywhere. i would still prefer the uniform we have at the moment. i don’t like how they have put it together. by having your house name below the school logo in your colour sounds a bit strange. it is asthough we are going back to primary school by wearing polo shirts and jumpers. so i don’t think it will go very well first of all, but it could get better.

James
Mar 31, 2009 18:19

To all those who think that changing the uniform is a bad idea – visitors A L W A Y S pick on the fact that the uniform isn’t worn properly. Some students have their ties. In some lessons, almost half the lesson time (ok, maybe not, but it at seems that way, at least) could be spent by teachers trying to get students to wear the correct uniform.

This would actually make people look smarter, and as a college that can only be good.

Personally, I will be sticking to my blazer- it’s far more practical, and it will only have to last one more year!

Although I do agree with the fact that we now have bags in lessons does eliminate some practicality issues- and this might be part of the reason for the switch.

If students actually have a problem, than use your voices! The college parliament is more than willing to discuss your views.

WHY???
seriously, the way i think bout it, giving us that stuff to wear, we’re going backwards, i wore that stuff in primary school. besides, the blazers look better, if its going to be changed, keep the idea about the house name and the logo, just dont put it on a sweatshirt.
put it on something like a hoody, think bout it, its probably what the peoples want.
Summer, keep it the way it is, polo shirt, normal trousers and so on.
just dont even touch the sweatshirts, for the love of god…..

i am a yr 5 student and am very disappointed that i wont get the chance to look smart and dress up wth a tie and blazer. i think this makes the students look like primary jumpers and i am sure it wont be long before the kids start wearing their shirts out over their trousers. i would prefer to dress the way they do now.

i think that we look stupid and where are we going to put our pens and pencils, log book, ect….it looked fine the way it was.i know you are trying to do the best to make us happy but we do look like primary school children as said in another reply. not mention the expence our parents are suppose to pay.

i really dont like the new uniform. i mean if you have to wear the jumper all the time and it was a really hot day…… you get the idea. plus i was really excited about getting out of the primary school uniform and i liked the current uniform (im used to it ive been in it for about 3or 4 years now) and i dont want to go back to the childish one :( and the summer uniforms just going to be the same just without the jumper….

so i really go against the idea of the new uniforms…. dont mind the ideas of hoodies with school logos on it more comfier and easier to take on and off but jumpers is a no no :)

Personally, I really dont like the new school uniform. It feels like we’re goin back 2 primary schools.I think that blazers make us look a lot more tidier. Its a gr8 idea about the logo and house thing, just not on a sweatshirt. Put it on a hoodie, (most people wuld want it on a hoody) :’(

Besides, where u gnna put ur things? Tht wuld mean u’d have 2 bring a bag 2 skl, but it can b annoying carryin it around evrywhere. U cnt put it in ur locker, bcuz most people brake in 2 them.
Fink of the year 7′s tht havejst spent all tht money on a blazer, tie, blouses etc. It was basically jst a waste of time. Most of my mates say they dont like itt either. I really like the uniform as it is. Please dnt change it. :’(

I personally think its not so great, we would look like munchkins from primary school, and there trying to teach the children in my year about what work would be like, HONESTLY do you think we are going to be able to get in the state of mind to learn about growing up looking like that?
I guess a better option would be to use a jumper or black jacket with a zip, so that we dont have to look like a spud, with just the white polo-shirt underneath with a pair of black trousers.

Mar 31, 2009 20:02

I thought we had this debate a while ago and a survey was done on line and it was all agreed that nobody, neither parents or students wanted this change of uniform. I very much agree with a previous comment that if the present uniform was enforced better (instead of jeans, hoodies and uggs or patterned trainers) there is nothing wrong with it at all. The sweat shirts are awful and look like primary school uniform, my children thought they left these behind many years ago and after a few washes they will look scruffy and worn. The question has to be asked is this really what the majority want or is it just easier for the school then implementing discipline with the original uniform.

year 7 parent
Mar 31, 2009 20:50

Oh my god, it looks awful. Why do you feel the need to change the uniform there is nothing wrong with it and it does look smart. This new uniform is very primary school. My child hates it and so do all their friends. They have nowhere to put their things eg log book, pens. I thought we had left this look behind at the end of year 6. I have a daughter starting next september and she is very upset she wont get to wear the tie and blazer. I think this new primary style uniform will be a BIG mistake.

Bad move! the wearing of Blazes & ties sets the college apart from the rest of the scuffy schools. It also gives the students some pride in their appearance and also a feeling of bonding with their fellow students.

i personally think this new uniform looks stupid. I think it makes us look like primary school kids. That is what i wore in primary school. You have never changed the uniform before so why change it now? i think out uniform looks fine. I don’t mind the idea of having a new uniform but not so we look like little kids. Also i personally think what is the point in year 10′s wearing it as we only going to have to wear it for a few of months. Also i like our ties. And where are we going to put or pens and stuff i mean blazers hold all our pens now we aren’t going to have no where to put them, and you moan when we forget them!

Mar 31, 2009 23:46

Personally i think it is a change for the better, i have watched all the kids walking home from school and think that majority of them look really scruffy and like they have been dragged through a hedge backwards!! Let’s face it apart from Bank Managers and the like who actually goes to work in a suit and tie and who would want to!! It is a bit old fashioned in this day n age! My son had his blazer new in September when he started and to be honest he needed a new one before he returned after the christmas holdays but i was hanging out til September, and all his shirts are shabby and some stained, so i was going to have to replace most of it anyway! i am looking forward to the change and feel it is for the better and a real plus for me is no more shirts to iron :-)

I personally think that the new school uniforms is sloppy! They will all look like primary school children. What have the new year 7 students got to look forward to when starting in September, a school uniform the same as they already wear! Whoever thought of this new uniform must have shares in Dobsons, if you are going to make the kids wear polo shirts then why do they have tho carry the Neale Wade logo and can only be purcased from one shop, which costs a fortune! Shirts, ties and Blazers look much smarter. If you had tighter control on how the ties are supposed to be worn, then the kids wouldnt look so scruffy. A simple clip on tie would have sufficed, instead of changing the whole uniform!!!!!

School govereners have no consideration for struggling parents, during the CREDIT CRUNCH!!!!

personally i think its a good move. just think you wont get nagged when going into the dinner hall about uniform nor will you get nagged when ofstead come in. also yes the sweatshirts are horrid but they can go in your bag and wear the polo shirts like you do in the summer right? Plus for me and fellow year 10sw we only have a year left so why make a fuss about it now? just wear it and get over it its not like wearing something youve worn before is going to make a difference its your last year where they can tell you what to do so just wear it. as for the pens etc. bags in lessons now dear its your problem if you dont use them. also i think that its a bit ridiculous us asking for hoodies yes i do personally want one but be practical here do you really think we are going to get them anyway? neale wade would just say that it will increase crime around town blah blah blah because they are stereotypical to “Hoodies” as old people State us as.

i think its a very good move, and its really good taht you have allowed a choice of the current uniform in there too.

well done neale-wade youve made a good move for once(H)

Apr 1, 2009 10:06

I have children inY9 and Y7. Many of the comments left by parents and students are interesting and everyone should have a fair say. I am disappointed with the change. Whilst I’m happy to do away with the ties and shirts, I think a total re-brand could have been considered. The red/black/white colour combination is awful. Why not have introduced a more colourful solution to the problem of school uniform. Black is dull and predictable, not smart. Why do we have to dress our children in such boring attire! By the way, children will always try and find ways to accessorise uniform.

its true that girls will never wear ties in later life again, but i prefer the old uniform to the new one, its true, it does look like a primary school uniform, i would rather look ‘scruffy’ tahn like a year 5.
i must admit its not so bad, but if im going to wear it, i would rather it be a V neck jumper instead of a round neck.
plus, it has no pockets, and the little pockets on trousers are hardly enough for pens pencil, pencil cases, revision book, log books and homeworks
it okay i suppose, just a few minors.

Apr 1, 2009 11:43

I personally agree with the parent who’s view is that the uniform should not have been changed but that
the pupils should have been encouraged to wear the current unfirm correctly. I believe the school have taken the easy option here! There is nothing as smart as a blazer and tie when worn correctly and as some of the pupils have pointed out they have pockets in these for pens etc. I was surprised but my daughter actually agress with me and would prefer to keep the current uniform

For all those saying they wish to keep the tie – WEAR IT PROPERLY (it belongs round your neck not your chest) then the school wouldn’t look at changing the uniform.

As for the blazer – YOU CAN STILL WEAR IT! but with a jumper as well.

Apr 1, 2009 16:08

I have a son who will be joining Neale Wade in September and am really disappointed that you have decided to change the uniform.I think it will make the children look like juniors and also I think that after a few months the chosen outfits of sweatshirts will turn into hoodies and the children will completely loose respect for the school and their surroundings. The point of a uniform is to look smart and I don’t feel that this idea will help the children or the teachers,in fact i think it is just giving in to the children who do not follow rules and if you can not as a school get your pupils to wear a uniform properly then what else do you fail at

Angry Parent
Apr 1, 2009 16:29

Here we go again – when you can’t police the uniform or instill the discipline into the kids, then give in!!! That seems to be the answer, what next designer trainers all colours?

What happened to setting standards high? We have a good smart uniform, one which distinquishes the older children from primary schools. If you cannot instill the discipline into the kids to wear the uniform correctly then I am worried what else you letting them get away with.

You should have policied it correctly from the start, hassle I am sure for some teachers but a small pain for a long term gain. Sending pupils home for incorrect uniform would have soon sorted out the problem!!

Other schools manage it why cant the Neale Wade??

anon
Apr 1, 2009 16:31

i think the uniform is great for primary school children but we are at a secondary school and if you want us to be more mature then atleast dress us like it and give us some respect but it is a cool uniform but just not for us :(

Nobody will see them under the sweatshirt, so why are we being forced to purchase uniform for just one supplier!

You cannot enforce a uniform if there is only one supplier! Not everyone can afford to buy polo shirts etc from Dobsons. An alterntive should be optional!!!

Apr 1, 2009 18:49

I like the new uniform. I’m pleased it’s been changed as it looks far more comfortable than the current one, plus with this one there won’t be as much lesson time wasted getting kids to put their ties on properly, put their blazers on etc etc.
You’re allowed to have bags in classroooms now, so why are you worrying about where you’re going to put your stuff? The rules were changed!
The new uniform looks awesome and my little sister likes the look of it, so we’re all for it.
To all those people that don’t like the new uniform: Blazers are still allowed and bags are allowed in lessons so stop worrying about where your stuff is going to go, if it still a problem for you, use your voice!

I have just paid out for a uniform half of it not going to be worn again, now you want be to buy polo shirts with a logo which after a few washes will need replacing at least with the shirts i could go to a supermarket buy a couple in a pack for a fiver. the current uniform is smart and if enforced encourages pride and a sense of responsibility some of the old fashion values that society complains that our young people don’t seem to have. if kids don’t wear the uniform inform parents put them on report. action is better than teaching them that the rules can be changed for an easier life.
As a new parent I don’t remember any information about this being given to me in this past year. Some of us don’t live on the Internet.

Do you have to wear it because i would prefer if this new uniform was optional? The credit crunch will make buying it very expensive

A Parent
Apr 1, 2009 22:53

I agree with the above comment.

I don’t like the new uniform at all, it is no different in style to all the primary schools in the area. Older pupils, in particular Year 10 and 11 pupils, will not be happy to wear this. Admittedly, its not a fashion show, but dressing teenagers like youngsters is not going to work. The new uniform isn’t particularly smart anyway, and once washed a few times will be even worse.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of pupils just turn up to school wearing black tops of their choice, rather than the official one – and the uniform will look more scruffy than it does at present. All teenagers want to be individuals, and will accessorize their uniforms accordingly. The change of dress code won’t make any difference.

Personally, I’d rather the school concentrated on behavioural issues and the raising of standards in the classrooms, instead of worrying about ties being perfect and shirts tucked in.

As for the lengthy discussion process….. who was this with? I have 2 pupils at Neale-Wade and didn’t know anything about this change until yesterday!

?
Apr 2, 2009 10:36

If parents look around schools nationally, you will find most secondaries wear the sweat shirt and polo shirt combination. Some schools changed them 10 to 15 years ago. Maybe Neale-Wade is just getting with the times?

Students really should be encouraged to carry bags and not use their pockets instead. Now bags are allowed in the classroom this shouldn’t be an issue. A pencil case with the basics; pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener should not really be carried in a blazer!

Students are implying currently they do not like wearing a blazer, and by the way they currently wear their shirts and ties, they obviously don’t want to wear them either. If students really want to keep the current uniform then they should make a move to start wearing the shirts and ties smartly.

It is also important to remember that not all jobs now require shirts and ties for men. Many supermarkets now opt for more practical sweatshirts or polo shirts with the company logo on them. Why then, aim to enforce an outdated uniform concept?

Sorry Neale-Wade but I think you have got it wrong. What a backward step. The new uniforms are more suitable for younger children. James and I would like to express our grave disliking of the new college unform. We appreciate the fact that the new uniform will make us look morepresentable but we also believe that the current college uniform makes us look more mature.
Sweatshirts and polo shirts are generally more of a primary school idea. We also believe that the sweatshirts wont be worn by half the students and hoodies will be worn instead. We blieve this will be due to the fact that our fellow students will feel almost baby-ish in the new uniform.

Thank you for reading our view on the matter.

I only just heard about this, and I find it quite ironic that I was only saying today that the Neale-Wade uniform looked old and dated. I can remember my secondary school getting rid of blazers over 20 years ago, to be honest I don’t know many schools that still have them.
I see many concerned parents here stating that this will be a backward step on the smartness front, however as a member of the public passing the college during the end of school period I can say they have nothing to worry about, the existing uniform appears to be so poorly worn most of the kids appear to be ABSO wannabes or trying out as an extra in ‘The Bill’.

As a parent of younger children, soon to attend the Neale-Wade, I see this only as a positive step by the school.

Are any of you going to be happy?
I remember when everyone kicked up a fuss about uniform last time, and pretty much EVERYONE i spoke to hated the uniform as it is. Now the school actually change it and you ‘wont wear it cos your too cool to just behave’? At the end of the day, school is school. It’s not a playground. It’s not a youth club for you to socialise in, its a school. A place to actually learn something, rather than hanging around all day long doing nothing. Get over it. You’ve got to wear it, but from 9 – 3.20? Whats the point in complaining!
Stop it!
